Facing History and Ourselves

Facing History and Ourselves is “a non-profit organization that combats racism and antisemitism by using history to teach tolerance in classrooms around the globe.” Justin discovered this important organization, learned about its mission, and felt compelled to partner with them as a writer to talk to its members about his relationship with Holocaust survivor Ziggy Silbert. Meeting with Ziggy began as a community service project, but through the years has evolved into an important and meaningful friendship.

Here is the Mission Statement of Facing History and Ourselves.

“Facing History and Ourselves is an international educational and professional development organization whose mission is to engage students of diverse backgrounds in an examination of racism, prejudice, and antisemitism in order to promote the development of a more humane and informed citizenry.

By studying the historical development of the Holocaust and other examples of genocide, students make the essential connection between history and the moral choices they confront in their own lives.”

Endorsements and Reviews of Facing History and Ourselves

“I was not prepared for what I just read. Your words leaped off the page into my heart! I had no idea that you and Ziggy [were] such “soul mates” embarking on a journey that neither of you suspected that day you first knocked on apartment number 264. Thank you, Justin, for showing us that age is timeless and that love is real. A remarkable piece!” Andy Shanker

“What a day!  The residents were “blown away” by Justin.  At dinner so many came up to us to tell us how much they enjoyed the presentation.  And, it was the absolute best medicine for Ziggy.  All in all, it was a winner, and Justin is a winner. ”

“I’m in tears reading the wonderful way Justin expresses himself in his special friendship with Ziggy. Planting a seed in the garden of relationships is a privilege for me – in this case, the soil was perfect, just the right amount of attention and love.” Loretta Modelvesky

“I just want to reiterate how much the residents at HP enjoyed Justin’s talk on Tuesday. There was a lot of buzzing around here like, ‘Can you believe that boy?’ Residents were commenting to each other into the evening as well. I went by the library after dinner and it was full of women talking about Justin. HP really got lucky and I know we hope for a repeat appearance in the future.”
